Over 350 students from FHHS, FHN, FHU, Barnwell, Bryan, FHMS, and Hollenbeck attended the annual Manufacturing Day hosted by St. Charles Community College on Oct. 1. Students had the opportunity to meet with professionals and learn about a variety of job opportunities in manufacturing.

Panel of manufacturing professionalsThe morning began with a panel discussion that included professionals in the manufacturing industry. Students had the chance to ask the keynote speakers questions, seek advice from the experts, and learn more about their experiences working in the field. From there, the students attended an expo where they met with a variety of representatives from both large and small companies in the local area, including Nike, Seyer Industries, MiTek, and more.

As the students traveled from table to table, they were greeted by employers ready to share information about their company and to show off their cool tools like 3D printers. “It is an important day for the students,” shared a representative from True Manufacturing. “It allows us to promote manufacturing and to show that there are meaningful jobs out there. It also gives them something to strive for in their education at a young age, so they have options as they continue to grow.”

Natalie Althof, a junior at FHHS and a student in the PLTW program, attended the event for the second year in a row. “It’s an incredible experience,” shared Althof. “I never realized how many opportunities you could have after you graduated. We take these engineering classes, but when you come to Manufacturing Day, you learn the real-life applications and everything that is involved.”

After the expo, different student groups toured several local manufacturing facilities. FHHS teacher Dane Williamson shared how this firsthand experience is important for students as they prepare for their future careers. “They may not know what they want to do right now,” said Williamson, “But it gives them an idea of where they can go and what they could do in the future.” Overall, the day provided students with a new perspective and information about the manufacturing industry, and hopefully, stirred some excitement for potential careers in the future!
