This year, Bryan Middle School is celebrating 20 years since they first opened their doors to students on Aug. 24, 1998. To celebrate the anniversary, the school displayed a “throwback” sign to welcome students on the first day of school, the same banner that was used in 1998 as the first class of Patriots took their initial steps into middle school. The banner has special significance because it has the signatures of all of the staff and students from that first year.

Seven of the original staff members still work at Bryan Middle School today, including Lorri Richardson, Gina Ostermeyer, Jennifer Fredrick, Maureen Lane, Dr. Kim Shamel, Angela Otto and Pat Larkin. One of those Bryan students from 1998, Adam Gash, is now a custodian at the school.Staff at Bryan Middle School hold the original banner from 1998

“Seeing the original banner that the staff signed 20 years ago brought back a lot of memories,” said school counselor Dr. Kim Shamel. “The day the new staff was given a tour of the building still in progress, smelling the “new building smell” after the building was completed, and the joy of setting up my classroom with energetic teammates surrounding me in every room. The optimism and family environment was here from the beginning!”

As part of the 20-year anniversary celebration, staff members held a special event when the teachers arrived back for the new school year on Aug. 2. Festivities included a 1998 song playlist as well as a Bryan trivia competition, which provided an opportunity for the faculty to learn more about the staff that worked at the school in 1998. T-shirts proudly displaying the three Patriot logos used over the years were also made for the staff. “I love working at Bryan,” said math teacher Jennifer Fredrick. “There have been so many relationships formed through the years not only between staff members but also with our Bryan Middle families and the community.”

“I take pride in this school, and so do the other staff members,” reflected U.S. History teacher Lorri Richardson. “Our administrators have always been a positive force in creating an atmosphere for student learning and appreciating the staff.” Congratulations on 20 years of quality education, Bryan Middle. Here’s to the next 20!
