FHSD Students Raise Record Amount for American Heart Association

Jumping rope, playing dodge ball, and shooting hoops may seem like playtime to some, but for students in FHSD, it’s a matter of heart. During the 2016-17 school year, FHSD elementary and middle schools collected a record total $109,011.48 for the American Heart Association (AHA) through Jump Rope for Heart, Hoops for Heart, and Dodge for Heart. Francis Howell School District is always looking for ways to save taxpayer dollars and still improve convenience for parents and students. Both goals are achieved with the Peachjar flyer distribution system. FHSD delivers school information and approved flyers from community organizations electronically through Peachjar. Niche has just released its 2018 list of best Schools in America, and has ranked the Francis Howell School District No. 16 in Missouri. To help promote learning during the summer months, the Francis Howell School District hosted App Camp, where middle school students learn to create and market a mobile app. This is the third year for the camp, and students had the unique opportunity to construct a storyboard for their application idea, use programming languages to develop their app, and also create a marketing plan for their app.   Read more about FHSD hosts App Camp

New Activity Fees and Changes to High School Activity Transportation

The FHSD Board of Education has approved the recommendation of the Extracurricular Task Force to establish an activity fee structure for the 2017-18 school year. Students participating in a sport, activity, or club - in which a sponsor or coach is paid a stipend - will be required to pay a yearly activity fee. Students will be assessed one fee regardless of how many sports/activities/clubs they participate in during the school year. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is a busy place year-round, and not just during the school year. There are more than 2,000 employees in the District, and almost 20 percent of them work a 12-month schedule. “The District does not shut down over the summer,” said FHSD Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris, “quite the contrary. Educating 18,000 students is a year-round, full-time job. On May 11, 2016, a severe thunderstorm with large hail caused significant damage throughout the Francis Howell School District. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is committed to providing engaging and enriching camp opportunities to students over the summer months. Two of the most popular are the elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) and middle school STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) camps. “Girls on the Run” at FHSD

Girls on the Run has empowered strong, motivated, and healthy girls across the country and in the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). Girls on the Run is a 10-week program recognized by the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) as one of the nation’s “Most Influential in Health and Wellness” programs available to young girls in third through eighth grade. Girls on the Run is the only program in St. Louis with this recognition. Not only does it focus on training for a 5K run at the end of the program, it also helps girls develop their strength of character, confidence, compassion toward others, encourages creating positive connections with peers, and many other life skills necessary for growth and maturity. This year, six FHSD schools participated in the 10-week program, and will participate in the 5K run in downtown St. Louis, on Saturday, May 13. Katie Ambrose, a seventh grader at Bryan Middle, is a basketball prodigy. Recently named to the U16 (players under the age of 16) USA basketball team for the United World Games in Austria, Ambrose will be playing against girls three years older on a world stage. On March 4, sixteen students in Dave Spies eighth grade Honors Physical Science class participated in the Regional Science Fair at Francis Howell North (FHN) High School. The students are learning so much that it would be a shame to simply take a test, or write a research paper. By emphasizing the science fair projects, Spies was able push the envelope for his students to get more out of the class, and have the possibility to compete in the Regional Fair. There are so many memorable trials in history, but two stand out in recent memory – the mock trials held at Bryan Middle School earlier this year. They were an opportunity for students at Bryan to learn how to communicate in a different way, and according to a very specific set of rules. On Friday, Feb. 2, 2017, the Science Fair returned to Bryan Middle School. Science teacher Dave Spies enlisted the help of faculty, staff, and the Bryan PTO to reinstate the Science Fair after a long absence. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) will be dipped in red the week of Oct. 24-28, as schools across the District and the nation celebrate Red Ribbon Week, an event dedicated to raising awareness for alcohol, tobacco, drugs and violence prevention. Student safety is always a top priority of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). The District annually conducts a variety of safety drills including fire, tornado, earthquake and intruder drills. Participation in these safety drills is where most students get directly involved in their own safety. Not even in high school yet, Zoey is already making her mark on her community by helping raise awareness about students with special needs. FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

The buses that safely transport students of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) every day will display a special new sticker starting in August, after earning the “Total Fleet Excellence” distinction for 2016. The stickers indicate excellence in the overall maintenance and reliability of the District’s bus fleet. The distinction is determined by the Missouri State Highway Patrol based on the results of the annual school bus inspection, a program conducted by the Patrol’s Motor Vehicle Inspection Division.   Read more about FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, all eighth grade students and incoming high school seniors will be required to have the meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine. The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) has announced that Dr. Suzanne Chester has been named the new principal at Bryan Middle School, effective July 1, 2016. Dr. Chester will be replacing Mark Delaney, who was named FHSD Director of Human Resources in May. She is currently serving as assistant principal of Fort Zumwalt East High School. As principal at Bryan Middle, Dr. Chester hopes to promote excellence among students, teachers, and community members.  Read more about New Bryan Middle School Principal Announced
